Few people are aware of the "attitude" that Israelis adopt toward the United Nations, even though Israel is a member state. For decades, the UN has been a thorn in the side of the Israelis—especially since July 1, 1952, when Israel took over tasks that the UNRWA had previously performed for incoming Jewish colonists from Europe. There was a reason for this:
The UNRWA was established in 1949 with a mandate to register all Palestinians as refugees—including those who had not been registered before that year, as well as subsequent generations. This mandate hinders the Israelis in their expansion of colonized territory, even though they have never officially registered their national borders with the UN.
The lack of respect for the United Nations as an impartial organization in the Palestinian territories—as well as the attacks on the UNRWA in Gaza and the West Bank, and on UNIFIL in southern Lebanon—stems from this development.
The issue surrounding the UNRWA is not merely about the Israeli-led campaign to circumvent the UN in this manner—a campaign later joined by the U.S., Great Britain, and the European Union. The attempt to link the UNRWA to Hamas is also part of this.
